What Is Body Fat Percentage? A Practical Guide
Body fat percentage estimates how much of your total weight comes from fat mass instead of muscle, bone, water, and organs.
Why this metric matters
Scale weight gives you one total. Body fat percentage gives you composition. Two people can weigh the same, yet have very different amounts of lean mass and fat mass.
That is why body fat percentage is often more useful than BMI when you want to understand progress from strength training, fat loss, or recomposition.
What is a healthy range
Healthy ranges depend on sex, age, and activity level. Women generally carry more essential fat than men, so the reference ranges are different.
Use the category as context, not as a diagnosis. Small day-to-day shifts are normal, especially when hydration, food intake, and training load change.
- Men: fitness levels are commonly in the mid-teens.
- Women: fitness levels are commonly in the low-to-mid twenties.
- Athletes may sit lower, but lower is not automatically better.
How to use the number well
Measure under similar conditions each time. The best pattern is same method, same time of day, and similar hydration.
Focus on trends over 4 to 8 weeks instead of reacting to a single reading.
